East Anglia Market Monitor – Q3 2018

There were no signs of a summer slowdown as deal volumes surged ahead across the region for quarter 3 of 2018 with 60 recorded, up from 56 in the same quarter in 2017.

This quarter saw technology deals lead the way with 14 transactions, followed by eight healthcare & veterinary transactions including our own client Slate Hall which was acquired by CVS Group in August. Business services saw a drop in deals from 14 in this quarter in 2017 to 7.

There were four private equity transactions in the region over the summer – two for ECI with the acquisition of 4Ways from Synova, and the MBO of Arkessa, one for Literacy Capital with the acquisition of Mountain Healthcare, and our own transaction with the £9m investment in Ventrica by Mobeus Equity Partners.

Looking at the overall region, Cambridgeshire led the way with 19 deals primarily in technology and healthcare & veterinary, whilst Hertfordshire sprinted into second spot with 14 deals spread across a range of sectors.

Types of deals were dominated by business sales topping the list at 26, followed by 15 fundraising transactions and 11 acquisitions. Notably there were seven MBOs this quarter, compared to none in the same quarter in 2017.

As businesses revenue streams and service delivery continue to evolve, the debt market tends to follow suit. Access to sufficient liquidity is critical for financing working capital, growth, capex, and a partial/full exit. Whether you are an asset heavy, or more service orientated operator, there are a broad range of debt finance instruments available to help meet both your current, and future cash requirements.

The right strategic acquisition, well planned and well executed, can be an excellent way to make a step change towards growing your business. Organic growth is tough. However, an acquisition in the UK or abroad is no magic bullet either and needs to be carefully planned, executed and integrated.
