Forward East Anglia Market Monitor – September 2017

Deal volumes held up across the region this month with 20 reported across the media.

East Anglian businesses were on the charge with acquisitions leading the way with nine in total. Three of these acquisitive businesses are in the manufacturing and construction sectors (Avingtrans, Stonbury, GJB Holdings), while two are regional listed companies – Angling Direct made their first acquisition following their AIM flotation earlier in the year, and CVS plc added an equine veterinary business to further enhance their growth outside the companion animal space.

There were five business sales across a range of sectors, from agriculture, with pig farming operation Easey Holdings sale to Tulip, to financial services with Marshall Motor Group’s sale of its leasing business to Northridge Finance.

Finally September saw five fundraising transactions. And while last month was all about the seed funding platforms, this month it was the turn of the institutions with Cambridge Innovation Capital leading two investments in PROWLER.io and Cambridge Medical Robotics and Touchstone Innovations leading an investment in Ieso Digital Health.

Management buy outs are another way of buying or selling a business – it is a sale of the business to a management team. However, in most cases, you as a group of managers will not have the funds to buy the business and will require assistance from banks, private equity and the vendor.

The right strategic acquisition, well planned and well executed, can be an excellent way to make a step change towards growing your business. Organic growth is tough. However, an acquisition in the UK or abroad is no magic bullet either and needs to be carefully planned, executed and integrated.
